On one of these Sundays, phone rang, it was Danny, who asks me to come over and look after Nico, who’s just arrived from Ibiza. Yes! I ran up Fifth, entered Danny’s, and sure enough, there, on his bed, in black Moroccan robes, is Nico herself. Enormous, candid eyes fixed on us. Shorn of eyebrows. I fixed us some vodka-and-grapefruit drinks, and we began to talk, she in the deepest, slowest, most Germanic voice imaginable. I asked her about her old lovers. Clémenti: “Once you’re crazy, you’re always crazy.” Delon: “He races horses now.” She showed a picture of the kid they had together, Ari. Cute. We agreed that Lou Reed now looks like a dead monkey. I played her Roxy Music, which she’d never heard of, and told her that Eno called her the best rock singer in history. Danny was working on an article in the other room. Nico disappeared to the little girls’ room. We heard a loud boom! from the kitchen. Danny and I both ran there to see what had happened. He shot me a disapproving look, since I was meant to be the babysitter. Nico was splayed out on the kitchen floor, legs akimbo. We all looked at each other in silence, and then slowly, very slowly, Nico started to laugh. Then we all started to laugh, at the big, exotic loony bird on the floor.
